Midnight Lovers
New Year's Eve. The one night a year the whole room counts down to the same number. Notes on endings, beginnings, and the records in between.
There's a particular kind of magic in a room full of strangers all agreeing to believe in the same thirty seconds.
The venue filling up in the hour before midnight, long exposure light trails
I build the NYE set backwards from midnight — what's the record you want playing when the year flips? Everything before it is the long inhale. Everything after is the exhale. Tonight we started with something slow and soulful, wound through bossa and reggae, then opened wide right at the count.
Empty dancefloor at 9pm, lights still up
Packed floor at 11:50, lasers in motion
The crowd was every kind of person. That's New Year's — the one night where the guest list is just 'people who need something to hold onto at midnight.' The job is to give them that thing.
Confetti falling over the crowd at the turn of midnight
We played until well past 2am. Nobody wanted to leave and honestly, neither did we. The set drifted into rare edits, B-sides, things we'd been saving. When a crowd earns it, you give them everything.
The DJ booth at 2am, equipment lit in warm light, crowd still moving
See you on the other side of the count.
